In a current time where the starter kit for a female rapper is a colored wig, animated delivery and dreadfully boring flows. Jazzi Corleone is a breathe of fresh air for real Hip Hop lovers everywhere. Read below as we talk the origin of her rocking chair freestyles, the current state of Hip Hop and much more.
LMCC - When did you first start rapping?
Jazzi Corleone - My twin brother was the rapper & I was the singer. But my pops told me I sucked & I should just rap. I was writing poetry for as long as I can remember, but I was nine when I actually starting putting the rhymes on instrumentals and creating songs. I decided I wanted to be a rapper when I was 14.
LMCC- Is there a meaning behind or reason why you record your freestyles while in a rocking chair?
Jazzi Corleone - My maternal grandfather passed away when I was young. He was the head of the family & a very spiritual and powerful man. He owned a botanica on Courtland Ave back in the day & my mom still has a bunch of cultural pieces from the shop. The rocking chair was sent to him from his hometown in Puerto Rico back in the 70s. My most vivid memories of him consists of me sitting on the arms of the chair while he chatted and rocked me back and forth. Moms gave me the chair when I got my own room so it’s a comfort thing.
LMCC - What rappers do you consider an inspiration or would say molded your style of rapping?
Jazzi Corleone - DMX, Lupe Fiasco, Jadakiss, Cameron & Hov.
LMCC - In a current female rap game that is becoming oversaturated, what do you think sets you aside from other female artists?
Jazzi Corleone - Right now female rap is real juvenile and commercial. There’s grown ass women acting like they’re still in Junior High. The starter kit is a wig, a fit from Dolls Kill & a childish “nanana boo boo” personality. I actually enjoy telling stories & playing with different rhyme schemes and elaborate flows. I make music that’s relatable to everyone, but especially grown women on their grind. I don’t go hard for the “look”, I’d rather be comfy & talk my shit. That’s what sets me aside.
LMCC - What is your opinion on the current state of Hip Hop?
Jazzi Corleone - It’s close to perfect and more versatile than ever. There’s a Kendrick & a Cole for the conscious group, there’s a Migos & a Travis for the turn up group, there’s a Don Q & a Dave East for the street talk, & females are getting more airtime than ever. Every city has a solid artist & that’s fire.
LMCC - If you could sit down and have a conversation with any rapper, dead or alive; who would it be?
Jazzi Corleone - Okay I’m going to cheat and pick one of each. Dead, would have to be Big L. I call myself Corleone because of him. And alive would be Nipsey Hussle. Besides his talent he’s super intelligent and conscious.
LMCC - What rising artists would you like to work with?
Jazzi Corleone - To be honest none right now. Niggas be dirt & I’m working/worked with most of my favs already.
LMCC - What artist on a major platform do you see yourself collaborating with in the future?
Jazzi Corleone - The Weeknd. I think we would make some heat.
LMCC - A lot of people complain that New Yorkers don't support one other as much as other cities. Do you find any truth in that statement?
Jazzi Corleone - In my case, no. So far I’ve gotten love from most of the NY industry folk that I’ve come across.
LMCC - Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Jazzi Corleone - In 5 years I’m nationally known & residing outside of the Bronx. At least two songs will have popped and hit the charts. I made a couple coins off ghostwriting too & the Jazzi youth program in my hood will be kicking off.
LMCC - What can we expect from Jazzi Corleone up and coming?
Jazzi Corleone - I’m dropping a few more visuals for the fourth quarter & my first full project. Stay tuned!
